RE – IMAGINING LANDSCAPES

Colour and place.

Vistas and visions.

Methods and interpretation.

There are as many diverse perceptions and visual interpretations of landscape as there are people, religions and cultures.

The land holds us and grounds us. We belong to the land with such intimate and powerful ties, that displacement disrupts our sense of belonging.

Ideas about landscape can contribute to the construction of mythologies, or be used as political tools of oppression or liberation in declarations of possession or nationhood.

In this exhibition of landscapes re-visited, Howlett and Verwoert’s images offer a celebration of the Marengo landscape in which both artists are immersed, whilst also drawing on memories of other sites.

Vibrant colour predominates in these spirited paintings by both award-winning artists,

while the works reflect two idiosyncratic interpretations of place.
