Collecting Butterflies

" Grown-ups love figures... When you tell them you've made a new friend they never ask you any questions about essential matters. They never say to you "What does his voice sound like? What games does he love best? Does he collect butterflies?" Instead they demand "How old is he? How much does he weigh? How much money does his father make? " Only from these figures do they think they have learned anything about him. " - Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, The Little Prince Julia & Cate's debut show, Collecting Butterflies, is a collection of drawings that explores the complexities and quirks of what makes a person unique. Julia and Cate met in art school in 2014 and, despite the differences in their individual styles, they have worked closely over the last two years exploring themes of identity and vulnerability. Collecting Butterflies will contrast Julia and Cate’s drawing styles and approaches against the theme of identity, unpacking what it is to know someone, and exploring visual representations of identity that hope to go beyond what standard portraiture depicts.
